Hunton Baptist Church History (1916 - Present)  

Thanks to Grace W. Patch, Alice W. Patch, and Judy C. King (among many others) for formally recording the history of Hunton Baptist Church over the decades.  The following historical highlights were obtained through the pages of the "History of Hunton Baptist Church" book as well through current happenings.

Historical Events
2002, July Dr. Jeff Johnson began his pastorate.
2001, October  Dedication ceremony for addition of new fellowship hall.
2000, October 22 Ground Breaking Ceremony for new larger education building and fellowship hall.
1986, November 1 Rev. Robert L. Boggs, Sr. accepted and started his duties as Pastor.
1986 We began holding Vacation Bible school at night.
1982, March 25 We first used our new building.
1981, March Broke ground for new sanctuary.
1980, Dec. 17 The old Sanctuary burned to the ground with nothing saved except the Steeple Bell and the front Plaque. In a news article, our Pastor said "When a building burns it doesn't mean the church is destroyed."
1978 It was decided to buy the Lewis property when it became available for sale. That house was eventually turned into our regular parsonage and the old parsonage was rented.
1970 The church decided to deed the 'ball diamond' property to the Hunton Civic and Recreation Association.
1968 The church was deeded the 'ball diamond' property by the Hunton Youth Recreation Association.
1966, May 15 Fiftieth Anniversary celebration was held.
1962, October Covered dish supper on the first Wednesday evening of each month was made a regular social activity.
1959, June 20 Ground breaking ceremony for construction of Unit I education building.
1958, December The church roll reached 300.
1956 Heating System was installed.
1953 An organ was bought and a church choir program began.
1951 Deaconesses were elected to serve on the Board of Deacons, with equal responsibilities.
1951, August 1 The parsonage building was completed and ready for Hunton's first full time pastor.
1938, June First Vacation Bible School was held at the church.
1930, February 16 Deed to church property was transferred to the church trustees.  The name of the church was changed from Taylors to Hunton.
1926, September The church signed a contract in order to get an electric line.
1917, Dec. 23 The church was organized with 25 charter members.
1917, May We bought the adjacent land from Dr. J. H. Winfrey.
1916, October The building of then Taylors Baptist Church was completed.  The total cost of the building was approximately $1,500.
1916, May  28 The first Sunday School was organized with 48 members.
1915 Gift of land by Dr. J. H. Winfrey.
